The ADBI-JSWA-JSC regional workshop on sanitation was held on 4 and 5 October 2011, and programmed as a side event of the 4th IWA-ASPIRE Conference and Exhibition on 4 October. Mainly focusing on policy for wastewater and sludge management (regulatory and institutional structure, financing, etc.), this workshop gathered numerous participants from countries of the Asia-Pacific and other regions of the world, in addition to speakers and specialists from international organizations, academia, and ministries.
Among the topics covered in this workshop were included the policy and best practices for wastewater/sludge recycling and reuse, and Clean Development Mechanism (CDM). A report was also made on Japan’s response to the sanitation threats caused by the Tohoku Earthquake/Tsunami disaster that occurred on 11 March 2011.
Finally, a field visit to a wastewater treatment plant, equipped for gas recovery, and a night soil/sludge treatment plant, where sludge is recycled via composting and sold as a fertilizer, was organized on 6 October.
