The celebration of the ‘Sewerage Day’ started in 1961 to encourage sewerage expansion in Japan at a time when coverage was extremely low (6%) and sanitation issues posed serious threats to people’s health and the environment. Previously called the ‘National Sewerage Promotion Day’, this event’s name was changed in 2000 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Sewerage Law.
Since 1962, the sewered population drastically improved to reach almost 76% to date. The Sewerage Day is a reminder of all the efforts that have been made to enable people in Japan to daily enjoy clean water and a healthy environment.
