2010 marked the 38th edition of the JICA training course on Sewage Works Engineering and Stormwater Technology, organized annually in Japan. Created in 1973, this course gathered a total of 451 trainees from 69 countries.
For about three months, the trainees stay at the JICA Tokyo International Center and receive lectures on a wide range of topics related to sewage works, from planning to operation and maintenance of sewerage facilities. The course program also includes the inspection of wastewater treatment plants and practical experiments for water quality assessment. The trainees are finally invited to prepare a case study aiming at tackling the wastewater-related challenges faced in their country. After returning home, the trainees are expected to play a central role as technical experts in the development of sewage works of their country.
The Sewerage Business Management Centre (SBMC) – a member organization of JSC – became in 1999 the entrusted agency in charge of the organization of the Sewage Works Engineering and Stormwater Drainage Technology Training Course. Among its responsibilities, SBMC plans the course schedule, selects the lecturers and makes the preparatory arrangements for the inspection of sewerage facilities.
